What makes an organization truly successful?
Many believe that success depends on strategy, financial incentives, or technological innovations. However, science shows that organizational virtue is the invisible but critical factor that influences an organization's performance and culture.
According to research by Tsachouridi & Nikandrou (2020) , when employees perceive that the organization operates with virtue, they develop prosocial behavior motivations . This means that they prefer altruistic and cooperative behaviors over individual interests. Virtue is contagious and creates an upward spiral of support and success (Cameron & Dutton, 2003; Cameron & Winn, 2011).
Let's look at the five key aspects of organizational virtue that make a difference!
1️⃣ Optimism: Belief in a Positive Outcome
Optimistic employees view failures as lessons rather than defeats (Secară & Stroe, 2023). In the organizational setting, this means that the team believes in the success of its efforts, even in difficult situations (Rego et al., 2010). Research shows that optimism is associated with greater resilience to stress, better health, and increased creativity (Seligman, 1991; Carver et al., 2010).
2️⃣ Forgiveness: Learning from Mistakes
In a healthy organization, mistakes are not punished, but are used as learning opportunities . Forgiveness does not mean forgetting or justifying mistakes, but rather managing negative emotions and moving forward (Worthington, 1998). Organizations that practice this practice have higher performance standards and increased innovation (Rego et al., 2010).
3️⃣ Trust: The Foundation of Every Successful Team
Trust among team members, as well as in leaders, is fundamental to collaboration. An organization that fosters trust is characterized by courtesy, respect, and honesty (Rego et al., 2010). According to Rusu (2021) , trust is not something that a leader provides, but something that each employee develops through their experiences.
4️⃣ Compassion: The Human Connection at Work
Compassion means empathy and action . When employees understand and care about their colleagues, a climate of mutual support is built. At the organizational level, this translates into better communication, reduced work stress, and increased engagement (Strauss et al., 2016; Rego et al., 2010).
5️⃣ Integrity: Consistency between Words and Actions
Organizational integrity is not just about ethics, but about consistency between values and actions . When an organization operates with honesty, trustworthiness, and consistency, employees feel safe to express ideas and take initiatives (Palazzo, 2007). In addition, employees who have integrity are more likely to accept constructive criticism and strive for continuous improvement (Fuerst & Luetge, 2023).
